The Isuzu FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round
Brocton 2 OJM Black Country 0
Another week, another FA cup competition fixture for Brocton with OJM Black Country the visitors this time in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase. Brocton were still missing key players with the versatile Charlie King dropping into right back in place of Adam Weldon.
The match started brightly for the Badgers when Reg Smith opened the scoring after just 4 minutes with a low effort from just outside of the box nestling into the ‘keeper’s bottom right-hand corner after a slight deflection. Just a minute later, another good chance saw Blanchette through on goal only to be brought down by Thomas Clapp, the OJM keeper, leading to faint penalty shouts but ultimately resulting in a corner.
The home side’s dominance continued throughout the first half, with OJM failing to register any clear chances in the first 45. A shock chance for the home side however came direct from Tony Allsopp whose long ball from his box almost ended up in the opposition net but was safely caught on the line by the keeper. Immediately afterwards, another long ball up the pitch found Christian Blanchette in a great position, but he dragged his first time shot wide of the post. Later, a shot from distance from Josh Simcox in the 27th minute whistled just wide of the post to see the last big chance of the half.
In the last minute of the first half, a long freekick into the box for Brocton saw Clapp make a big mistake when he came out to punch the ball clear, only to instead have it loop over his own head and go just behind for a bizarre corner opportunity for Brocton.
HALF TIME: Brocton 1 OJM Black Country 0
The second half started as the first ended with further dominance from the Badgers. On the 49th minute, a neat through ball from Smith Into the penalty area to Jake Thomas saw his subsequent shot saved by the keeper’s leg from just outside the 6-yard box. Just a minute later, a smart ball into the box from captain Connor Haddaway saw Blanchette with another great chance, this time headed down and going out, off of the marking defender.
OJM’s first real chance of the game came in the 52nd minute when Nehemia Zazi dragged his shot from outside of the box just wide of the far post. A minute later, it was Lucas Green-Birch’s time to be found through on goal, but his jab was straight at the keeper, who safely tipped the ball over the bar. In the 57th minute, Brocton hit the woodwork through Morgan Payne’s low curled shot just clipping the post.
OJM’s best chance of the game came after 62 minutes when second half substitute Kosheen Sappleton found himself through one-on-one with Allsopp, who calmly saved and cleared from close distance. At the other end, Payne immediately found himself in the same situation which ultimately earned the Badgers a corner.
In the 67th minute, Will Whieldon replaced Payne for Brocton and made an immediate impact after two minutes as he calmly slotted home after a smart flick round the defender from Smith found him in the box. The last real chance of the game came in the 84th minute with a soft free kick given to the visitors. The shot sailed just over the bar.
The blowing of the full-time whistle signalled the end to a dominant victory for Brocton over a good OJM side, topped off by two well-taken goals from Reg Smith and Will Whieldon. The victory sees the Green Army progress to the next round of the FA Vase, a cup competition the club will be looking to do well in after the great run seen in 2023/24. The Badgers return to league action on bank holiday Monday where AFC Wulfrunians are the visitors.
