Badgers dumped out of Hunt Cup

Tuesday 14th October

JW Hunt Cup Round 1

Wednesfield Community 1 Brocton 0

Alex Curtis rang the changes from the previous league game with only three of the starting line-up featuring at Stourport. The subs bench was stacked with regular starters. MFL Division 1 side Wednesfield also made changes from the side that drew with Bilston Town with only six starters from that fixture.

The first attack of note came down the Brocton right. Dylan Millington beat Noble Godwin, but his cross was comfortably dealt with by the Wednesfield defence. Sebi Fyfield was looking a threat down the Wednesfield left and Josh Simcox made a telling interception. Ibrahim Diallo found himself with a shooting chance down the right and hit the side netting with his effort. Brocton were having a lot of possession without creating any clear chances. On 15 minutes, Ben Haddaway’s shot was straight at Connor Howe. An excellent ball forward from Jake Triggs, picked out Millington, but under pressure, he headed wide. Brocton’s best chance of the half came just before the half hour mark. A delightful ball from Millington was into the path of Ben Haddaway but it needed a first time shot and his cross ended in a home free kick. Simcox created a chance for Millington, the one bright spark in the Brocton performance, but he was thwarted by excellent defending from Henry Brittijn.

Half-Time: Wednesfield Community 0 Brocton 0

Brocton should have taken the lead four minutes into the second half. Millington did well on the right to win the ball. He played it into Morgan Payne, and his shot rattled the cross bar with Howe well beaten. A minute later and it was Wednesfield that broke the deadlock. Excellent work by Sebi Fyfield down the left saw a low cross into the box where Leo Fyfield reacted quickest to steer the ball home. Brocton went close in the 53rd minute. A drive from Ben Haddaway was tipped over the bar by the flying Howe. It could have been two for Wednesfield on the hour when Stanford Stewart was given too much room, but his shot was well saved by Jack Sandel. Howe was called into action again in the 66th minute, diving full length to keep out Jude King. With all five substitutions made, Brocton were camped in the Wednesfield half. Jude King wriggled through into the area, but he was blocked off for a corner. In the 86th minute, Tom Vaughan picked out Charlie King, who dragged his shot wide. Brocton never looked like scoring as the Wednesfield defence, well marshalled by skipper Harvey Dangerfield, remained resolute and Wednesfield celebrated a giant killing at the final whistle.
