Badgers progress in the Vase

Saturday 23rd August

FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round

Brocton 3 Studley 2

Brocton made five changes to the starting line-up from the draw with Stone Old Alleynians. Into the side came Jack Sandel, Levi Reid, Cooper Marsh, Charlie King, and Reg Smith. Adam Weldon and Christian Blanchette both returned to the squad on the subs bench. Studley came into the game on the back of a 5-3 win over Stourport Swifts with Chris Uwabor bagging all five.

Brocton started the game quickly with Connor Haddaway creating a chance for Toby Smith with his shot saved low to his left by Divin Emmanuel. The King brothers combined down the left to create an opening for Reg Smith and his shot on the turn was well saved by Emmanuel. It was all Brocton in the early stages. In the 10th minute, Charlie King robbed Harry Lake, but the ball bobbled away from Reg Smith. A minute later, a dinked cross from Haddaway was volleyed wide by Reg Smith when he would have expected to hit the target. Brocton went closer still in the 16th minute. A superb cross from Reid was met by the head of Haddaway and Emmanuel pulled off a fine reflex save. The chances kept coming and when Charlie King picked out Toby Smith, he had to hit the target but dragged his shot wide. Reid was rolling back the years and a fine crossfield ball found Jude King but his ball inside lacked direction. A corner from Haddaway was flicked off his head by Jake Thomas and flew agonisingly wide of the far post. An excellent move by Brocton in the 28th minute led to the opening goal. Charlie King played the ball to Reg Smith who sent Jude King clear. He was tripped in the area with the referee pointing to the spot. Up stepped Haddaway to hammer the ball past Emmanuel. Within three minutes, it was two. Reg Smith robbed Lake, squared the ball to Charlie King for the easiest of tap-ins. The returning Reg Smith made it three in the 36th minute. A wonderful raking pass crossfield from Kenny Devoir was into the path of Haddaway. He played the ball inside to Reg Smith who turned it past Emmanuel.

Half-Time: Brocton 3 Studley 0

Surely Studley couldn’t be as poor in the second half and indeed that was the case as they pulled a goal back within three minutes of the start. Uwabor reached the by-line, his cross came back to Kyle Moseley who hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Thomas hit a shot straight at Emmanuel before Studley pulled another goal back in the 63rd minute. The ball ricocheted around the Brocton penalty area and Uwabor slotted home the loose ball. A minute later, Reg Smith hit a free kick which bounced off Emmanuel but there was no-one on hand to pick up the rebound. Thomas then hit a screamer from twenty-five yards, but it was straight at Emmanuel. Thomas then headed over from another pinpoint cross from Haddaway. Studley had a great chance to level in the 77th minute. Charlie Footes, looking suspiciously offside, raced clear but Sandel saved well with his feet. Sandel pulled out another excellent save in the 81st minute, pushing away a sharp shot from Saheed Sam. Deep into stoppage time. Blanchette attempted a volley from an audacious angle, but it cleared the cross bar. Brocton held on to progress to the next round where they will meet Wellington at Silkmore Lane.
