Walsall Senior Cup Round 1
Boldmere St Michaels 0 Brocton 2
Brocton travelled to Step 4 Boldmere St Michaels hoping to continue their unbeaten run. They made two changes from the side that won at Romulus on Saturday. Dan Evans and Cam Osborne came into the starting line-up with Adam Weldon and Charlie King taking their place on the subs bench. Boldmere had made a steady start in the NPL, sitting mid table.
It was Brocton that made the brighter start, passing the ball around on the 4G Church Road surface. In the 4th minute, a deep cross from Osborne picked out Will Whieldon who couldn’t quite bring the ball down. Reg Smith proved a handful for the Boldmere central defenders and his first attempt from 30 yards was off target. Smith almost turned provider when his through ball ran away from Christian Blanchette. The first attack of promise for the home side saw Liam Murphy cross from the right, the ball flashing across goal. In the 20th minute, a powerful run by Smith, across the central defenders ended with a shot that was just wide of Jono Brown’s goal. Four minutes later, Smith brought the ball down and volleyed straight at Brown. Very little was seen from Boldmere who were relying on long balls over the Brocton defence and long throws from Jake Wilkes. Smith again forced Brown into a comfortable save. Boldmere finally had an attempt on goal in the 35th minute but Wilkes’ shot was well wide. Just before half-time, Hisham Chiha curled a shot past Tony Allsopp’s far post.
Half-time: Boldmere St Michaels 0 Brocton 0
The second half began slowly with plenty of endeavour from both sides and little in the way of end product. In the 57th minute, a spell of keepy uppy from Smith created a shooting chance with his shot blocked by the home defence. A minute later, Jake Thomas took aim, and he too saw his shot blocked. Allsopp was brought into action on the hour when a shot from Murphy was straight at the Brocton keeper. Brocton took a deserved lead in the 67th minute. A left wing corner from Connor Haddaway was not dealt with by the Boldmere defence and Ben Haddaway hammered the loose ball into the net. Boldmere went close to an equaliser with a header from Callum North, but Allsopp saved comfortably. From a Boldmere corner, Smith turned defender, clearing a shot off the line. In the 78th minute, Allsopp raced out of his goal but was beaten to the ball by Murphy. Ben Haddaway, continuing his excellent form, was on hand to clear any danger. Brocton doubled their lead seconds later, Jake Thomas picking his spot from the edge of the area giving Brown no chance. It should have been three in the 84th minute. Thomas threaded the ball through to Whieldon with only Brown to beat but it was the experienced stopper that won this particular battle. Four minutes into stoppage time, Smith attempted to steer the ball goalwards towards an empty net from the half way line but on this occasion the shot lacked power and accuracy. The full time whistle went with Brocton deserved winners against their higher ranked opponents.
