Football returned to Silkmore Lane with a competitive friendly against Step 4 Chasetown in front of a healthy crowd.
The visitors started on the front foot with Delano Reid seeing his shot deflected for a corner. The Badgers first attempt came in the 10th minute with Jack Weldon’s shot comfortably saved by Curtis Pond following good approach play. Chasetown took the lead in the 13 minute. Reid’s shot was blocked and fell into the path of Trialist A who slotted the ball underneath Josh Moreton. Reid was proving elusive and good footwork from the winger was wasted with a disappointing finish. Jack Weldon was the man most likely for The Badgers, having a shot blocked for a corner. Chasetown doubled their lead in the 32nd minute. Trialist B weaved his way into the penalty are where he was tripped by Ben Haddaway. Referee Terry Holbrook pointed to the spot and Trialist B converted. Chasetown came close to a third when Oli Hayward’s goal bound header was well saved by the diving Moreton.

Chasetown fielded ten new players in the second half with only Ryan Wynter continuing. Former Badger Reg Smith almost made an immediate impression, setting up a chance for Jack Langston whose shot was off target. Jamie Weldon and Brad Roulston both had attempts on target but neither troubled Trialist C in the Chasetown goal. The visitors made it three just before the hour mark when a mistake at the back let in Trialist G, who finished superbly giving Moreton no chance. Chasetown continued to threaten and both Zak Foster and Trialist D should have done better. A loose ball from Trialist G fell to Cameron Jackson whose shot was just over the bar. With 15 minutes left, Brocton’s best chance of the afternoon fell to Jack Weldon, but his chip was high over the bar. As we approached the end of the game, the impressive Langston brought another fine save from Moreton.
