Brocton 0 Stockport Town 4

Brocton again were forced into changes with no less than five different starters from the side that lost at Stafford Town in Midweek. Stockport Town came into the game looking for back to back wins to climb above the Badgers.

In torrential rain, it was the visitors who created the first opportunity in the 6th minute. A corner from Jayden Major was headed goalwards by centre-back Geffry Ebhote forcing the returning Tonty Allsopp into a save. From the corner, Allsopp again had to save from Ebhote, this time with his legs. Brocton’s first attack of note saw Jake Thomas deliver a cross which was well gathered by Josh Schofield. Stockport went close in the 13th minute when a shot from Max Greenhalgh was deflected for a corner. Stockport continued to ask questions of the Brocton defence and a cross from Limpitshi Bongwanga was headed goalwards by Kieran Kennedy forcing a fine save from Allsopp. Kennedy turned provider with his cross headed wide by Kai Johnston. Brocton had an effort on target in the 17th minute with Cammeron Osbourne’s header from an Adam Weldon cross, straight at keeper Schofield. Stockport took the lead a minute later. A cross from the left was perfect for Bongwanga but he missed his shot. A thundering tackle came in, which would have resulted in a penalty if the area had not played advantage, and Leandro Tanswell Vargas side footed into the corner. Stockport made it two in the 22nd minute. A short corner routine saw William Calligan cross where Bongwanga made no mistake with his header. Greenhalgh tried again from distance but was off target. Osborne burst into the Stockport area, but he was stopped by a fine tackle from Kennedy. Brocton had a decent chance in the 38th minute. A dangerous cross from Adam Weldon flew across the face of the goal with no green shirt on hand to convert. In stoppage time, Tanswell Vargas went close as his shot was deflected for a corner.

Half-Time: Brocton 0 Stockport Town 2

Stockport began the second half in dominant form. An excellent run down the left by Calligan ended with a cross to the far post but skipper Paul Turnbull couldn’t bring it down to shoot. Good set-up play by Stockport allowed Greenhalgh to shoot on goal but his effort was well blocked by Jamie Weldon. Stockport should have made it three in the 57th minute. Jamie Walsh fed Bongwanga, and the big striker lifted the ball over Allsopp and, fortunately for Brocton, over the crossbar too. Stockport continued to press, and Johnston saw his close range shot blocked for a corner. Johnston put in an excellent cross which cleared Allsopp, but no-one gambled at the far post and the chance was gone. Stockport’s third goal came in the 69th minute. Tanswell Vargas cut inside, beat two Brocton defenders, and fired home with the aid of a slight deflection. It was almost four a minute later. Another fine run by Calligan saw him play the ball perfectly into the path of Turnbull. His side footed effort looked a goal all the way until it hit one of his own players in front of goal. Allsopp was a busy keeper, and he did well to save from Major. Major again tested Allsopp, the shot almost slipping through the keeper’s arms, but he gathered at the second attempt. Major was then clean through on goal and again, Allsopp produced a fine save to thwart the midfielder. Stockport made it four in the 77th minute. A cross from the right was headed back into the box. Bongwanga gathered, turned and his low shot gave Allsopp no chance. Stockport continued to drive forward. In the 81st minute substitute Thomas Beckett was played in, down the left hand side but his effort was wide, and he really should have hit the target. Bongwanga wasted another chance, clearing the bar from a good position. Beckett was again played through the Brocton defence, and he attempted to lob Allsopp with the Badger’s keeper equal to it. Fellow substitute Tomas Shepherd had the final opportunity of the game, a through ball sending him clear down the right but his effort was straight at Allsopp.
