Five-star performance from Reggie

Monday August 26th

Midland Football League Premier Division

Brocton 6 AFC Wulfrunians 0

It was back to league action for Brocton on Bank Holiday Monday with AFC Wulfrunians the visitors in the Midlands Football Premier Division. Brocton made two changes to the side that beat OJM Black Country in the FA Vase: Dan Evans and Will Whieldon replacing Lucas Green-Birch and Christian Blanchette. Tom Vaughan returned to the matchday squad with a place on the bench alongside 16 year old Cooper Marsh.

The game started slow, with the first chance not coming until after 10 minutes when Reg Smith struck just wide from a well-worked corner routine. It only took another 3 minutes for the deadlock to be broken however with Smith striking hard and low into the far bottom corner from just inside the box.

Wulfrunians’ first good chance of the game came in the 19th minute with a header in the box looping over Tony Allsopp in the Brocton goal, clipping the top of crossbar on its way over the top. 5 minutes later saw a flurry of opportunities for the Badgers with Smith, Morgan Payne and Whieldon all having efforts blocked by the opposing defence. The subsequent clearance led to a good chance for the visitors with a shot from distance which was safely tipped over for a corner by Allsopp.

Brocton had the ball in the back of the net again after 34 minutes, but the linesman put his flag for a dubious offside in the run-up against the scorer, Payne. Charlie King then also had a good chance late in the first half from distance that ended up just wide of the post.

The Badgers went into the break with a 2-0 lead after Smith doubled his tally after a flicked-on header played him through on goal, to take it around the keeper and safely tap it into the open net.

HALF TIME: Brocton 2 AFC Wulfrunians 0

Brocton continued to display their dominance from the off in the second half with a long ball from the defence proving a great example of route one football as it found Smith again running through, who slotted home for his hat-trick. Payne then had his second goal ruled out for offside after 49 minutes, before Wulfrunians had their best chance of the game narrowly roll wide of the post.

The visitors then made all 5 allotted substitutes at the same time, but this was to no avail as Reg Smith got his and Brocton’s fourth of the game in the 63rd minute after another long ball, this time from Jake Thomas was collected by the No.9 who broke away from his man to convert. Brocton made it five 10 minutes later after a mix up at the back for Wulfrunians gifted Whieldon a goal from just a yard out.

It was soon 6 for the Badgers when Smith got his fifth of the game after staying strong to turn his man and striking home. Before the end of the game, Brocton substitute Toby Smith had a great opportunity when played in behind but Tommy Jackson in the Wulfrunians goal put it behind. The resulting corner saw another few good chances in quick succession through efforts from Thomas and late substitute, Alex Curtis before the ref blew for full time to bring the match to an end.

5 goals from star striker Reg Smith helped to secure a strong victory for Brocton against good league opposition in a return to league football after a string of cup competition appearances for the club.
