Six wins on the trot for High Flying Badgers

Tuesday 21st February

North West Counties Football League First Division South

Foley Meir 0 Brocton 2

Brocton were forced into one change from the side that beat Eccleshall on Saturday. Skipper Kenny Devoir picked up a knock in the first half at the weekend and he was replaced in the starting line-up by Jack Bostock. This was the fourth meeting between the two sides this season with Brocton winning the most recent encounter 2-1.

Brocton were the first side to show any attacking intent. An excellent run down the left from Christian Blanchette forcing a 5th minute corner. Foley had an attempt on goal in the 7th minute, a shot from George Shaw saved at the second attempt by Tony Allsopp. Brocton took the lead in the 8th minute. A deep cross from Adam Weldon wasn’t dealt with and Will Whieldon drove the ball into the bottom corner. Brocton should have doubled their lead in the 12th minute. Blanchette picked out Connor Haddaway and his side footed effort was turned away by Andrew Walklate. Walklate was forced into another save moments later. Reg Smith ran clear down the left and his shot at the near post was turned aside by the Foley keeper. Smith should have hit the target in the 16th minute. A corner from Whieldon was met by the head of Brocton’s leading scorer but his header was off target. On a rare foray forward. Matt Goodwin headed over the bar for Foley. Blanchette had another chance for the visitors, shooting across the face of the goal. Chances were at a premium, but they were all falling to Brocton. From a Connor Haddaway corner, the unmarked Blanchette headed wide when he should have hit the target. In stoppage time, Whieldon shot over the bar.

Half-time: Foley Meir 0 Brocton 1

Foley made the first impression of the second half, Jayden Shepherd heading over from a right wing corner. An excellent run from the impressive Blanchette picked out Whieldon in the area, but he could not get enough on the ball for either a pass or a shot. Following a poor challenge on Ben Haddaway from Alex Scott, Reg Smith hit a free kick into the wall. Tom Wakefield had a half chance for Foley, but his shot hit a defender and went out for a corner. Foley’s main threat was the long throw of Goodwin with the Brocton defence standing up to the aerial bombardment. Substitute Aiden Lloyd was just off target for the home side. In the 75th minute, a pass from Whieldon opened up the Foley defence. Morgan Payne shrugged off the defender and was through one-on-one with Walklate with the Foley keeper winning this battle with a fine save. Three minutes later, Brocton made it two. A free kick from the left by Whieldon was met by the head of Payne, the ball finding it’s way into the corner of the net with Walklate not up to the task on this occasion. The second goal gave some impetus to Brocton and Walklate was again called into action, saving a shot from Blanchette with his legs after the chance was created by an inch perfect through ball from Smith. Smith had one more attempt on goal, the ball cannoning off Goodwin for a corner. Brocton comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to register their fourteenth win in fifteen games.
